For a number of years the Gateway Division has built small, portable model railroads. These projects have provided our members an opportunity to try new materials and commercial kits and to learn design and building techniques. Some projects have been raffled off to raise funds for the group. They have traveled to train shows and given young and old, new and experienced modelers a demonstration of what can be done in a small space. Related articles tell how projects were done. Some layouts were based on published magazines articles; others were designed by Gateway Division members.
View photo galleries of layouts. Browse the directory of modelers and layouts in the Greater St. Louis area. Most owners provide background on their railroad and what they are modeling, such as location, era, railroads represented, scale, size of layout, operations, and special features, plus photographs.
Beginning with the Project Railroads, our track plans for small model railroads give details on how to assemble structures, track, and scenery. The plan for the layout built by the Gateway Division during the 2001 annual train show and convention of the National Model Railroad Association focused on St. Louis area businesses and was duplicated for display at the Missouri History Museum. The future of the model railroading hobby depends on engaging young people. The knowledge and skills acquired will last a lifetime. And, model railroading is a wonderful family activity. Ideas on how to involve kids appear here, but we also welcome contributions! Contact us at kids-and-trains@gatewaynmra.org.
