Starting with several thousand images, here is an additional set of my favorite photos from my many railfan trips.

Rolling along. This east bound UP freight at track speed along the former MoPac right-of-way in Washington, Missouri. That’s the Missouri River in the background.

Westbound freight at Mattawana, Pennsylvania. Note the young children in the middle of the photo at the far left. I missed the better shot on the previous passing train when they were closer to the track, but when mom saw me raise the camera, made them move back.

The ultimate of “grab” shots, taken with my cell phone through the windshield when this BNSF stack train appeared just east of Flagstaff, AZ. Those are the Eisenhower peaks (12,000+ feet) in the background.

Role reversal: the prototype takes a page from the modeler handbook with these prefab turnouts being delivered to a distant location.

Track maze at Mexico Tower (now closed) at the east end of the Cumberland, Maryland yard on the CSX line.

NS eastbound freight creeps past workers fixing a broken slide fence in a deep cut at Cassandra, Pennsylvania. When wires on the fence are broken by rocks or large chunks of ice falling to the track, a red stop signal is automatically displayed to prevent rail accidents. This is the old Pennsylvania Line; the fourth track was where the trucks are positioned. This is about 10 miles west of the Horseshoe Curve.

This is the Powder River coal basin. Empty hoppers in the foreground are already in the queue on a balloon track on a never stopping route through the loaders and out again. The approaching train (headlight) is exiting the loader and starting its eastern run that may not end until it reaches the Tidewater in Virginia.

Historically Illinois Central rails now belong to Canadian National; here at Centralia, Illinois is this “rolling pipeline” unit train headed north.

My very most favorite railroad shot. This is at MG, halfway down the mountain between Gallitzin and Altoona, Pennsylvania. It is a couple of miles before the train starts around the world famous Horseshoe Curve. This is a highly desired location for rail photographers visiting the Horseshoe Curve.
