Amtrak showcased its past, present and future with a special 40th anniversary exhibit train filled with photos, period uniforms, dinnerware, vintage advertising and memorabilia, and interactive displays from Amtrak’s beginning in 1971 through today. The debut of the exhibit train, consisting of restored equipment and customized display cars, was at the 2011 National Train Day event in Washington, D.C. On the train’s cross-country journey, it stopped in St. Louis on September 11, 2011. The exhibit was free, and commemorative 40th anniversary merchandise was available for purchase in the last car of the train.
