Another fun to operate, small HO scale train layout that you can build with a riverport theme!
Looking for a small but unique HO scale model railroad track plan? The Gateway Central XII offers riverport harbor switching and train operation action, while still providing a complete mainline loop for just running trains. This layout features challenging to build kitbashed structures and may be easily expanded.
Three striking features set this railroad apart from others. The extensive harbor area in the center provides multiple locations for grain, oil, and cargo barges and the tow boat to move them. The lift bridge at the harbor entrance is an easy-to-build (kitbashed from a few inexpensive Atlas bridge kits) but unique structure. And the grain conveyor adds a delicate, but critical, detail to the grain elevator scene. See more photos of each building on this layout.
Can you tell me what the layout Benchwork measures? Also, do you knon what kits were used to create the lift bridge and what it measures?
Thanks!
Mike
The layout is approximately 4×7 feet in size. The lift bridge was kitbashed from bridge kits manufactured by Roco (a European model railroad manufacturer) and sold by Atlas in the US a number of years ago. Atlas no longer sells these bridge kits. The lift truss bridge is 9″ in track length. The tall end supports were bottoms from the Roco bridge model. The top uses Central Valley truss sections. The Roco 40080 through truss bridge was an inexpensive, nicely-made model when it was sold by Atlas. Kinda pricey to obtain now.
It looks like the bridge kits used to make the (nonfunctional) lift bridge will be available again in the U.S. soon. They will now be from MTH Electric Trains as a “Girder Bridge,” Walthers Part #507-801043, $12.95 each.
Great 4×8 Layout you have!
